I have 2 of these and keep one plugged into the dash socket of the GMC. Shows battery status when the motor is off and charging status when running. Inexpensive and has a large, easy to read back lit display that also pivots for best viewing angle. $15 at Amazon.

BOOST RELAY CHECK
CONNECTS ENGINE BATTERY TO HOUSE BATTERY
ALTERNATOR CHECK
* turn all systems off for over night
(see above)
* plug in the meter to the cig. lighter socket
* measure the starting battery (12.58 volts or so)
* start the engine
* look at the voltage (13.65 or so)
*the alternator is good and putting out (14.7 volts or so)
*no change in voltage - problem with alternator)

BOOST RELAY CHECK
CONNECTS ENGINE BATTERY TO HOUSE BATTERY
* turn all systems off for over night
(see above - LETS GET STARTED)
* plug in the meter to the cig. lighter socket
* measure the starting battery (12.58 volts or so)
* press the boost switch
* you should hear it click
* voltage measured will change
- go down if house battery is low
- will go up if house charger is on
* you know
- the boost switch is controlling the boost relay
- if no change - boost relay is not working

* you should hear it click
* voltage measured will change
- go down if house battery is low
- will go up if house charger is on

CHECK YOUR HOUSE CHARGER
* DO YOU HAVE A HOUSE CHARGER
* IS IT A BUZZ BOX
* WHAT IS A BUZZ BOX
* IS IT CHARGING ALL YOUR BATTERY BANKS
* WHAT VOLTAGE IS IT CHARGING
* #! TURN EVERYTHING OFF- (over night)
* UNPLUG THE GMC ( TURNS OFF THE CHARGER)
* READ METER - JOT DOWN THE ENGINE BATTERY VOLTAGE
* PUSH THE "BOOST" SWITCH TO READ THE HOUSE AND ENGINE BATTERY VOLTAGE
* PLUG IN THE GMC
* THE VOLTAGE SHOULD CLIMB TO THE "CHARGER VOLTAGE" (about 13.25 volts)
